Welcome to the home of Affine Psychology, a ground-breaking new school of thought that challenges the conventional wisdom of present-day popular psychology. Affine Psychology can be characterised by three important key words and domains: the Psyche, the Self, and the Absolute. Founded by a curious and obsessed Psyche, going by the alias 5MP only, Affine Psychology (AP) represents a major paradigm shift and hopefully an acceleration in understanding the human Self (the preferred term over “Mind”, “Mentality”, “Consciousness”, “Soul”, or “Cognition”). In AP, the word Psyche is actually closer to the German word “Geist”, which was used by Hegel and others to represent one part of some kind of ultimate spirit or “Ultimate Truth” called the Absolute, which I too get some purchase out of in describing reality’s ultimate “Wholeness”, “Oneness”, and underlying “Spirit”). As a result, spirit I conclude is a kind knowledge that persists in time despite the decay of regular organic matter that comprise a human. People pass away, but knowledge persists. The Psyche in Affine Psychology is kind of similar to this legacy of shared many concepts combined with a standard understanding of the Mind’s Mental Processes and Feelings.

I, known only by many as ‘5MP’, passionately propose that traditional cognitive psychology and behaviorism has fallen short in its attempts to truly grasp the complexities of the human psyche, therefore not leading to urgently needed approaches to therapy and treatment. It is this pledge to humankind that psychology has failed to deliver — especially if comparing it to the likes of physics, chemistry, or biology and what they and so many other fields have given to the livelihoods of every day people. So whilst mainstream psychology, namely cognitive psychology has no doubt made some valuable contributions to people’s lives, my strong judgement is that this has not been a successful academic discipline over the last century. Perhaps the Psyche is just too complex, more complex than splitting atoms? I personally don’t think so; I think we can simply do a whole lot better with big and bold new ideas.

The Affine approach diverges from the mainstream by recognising primarily via introspection and clear logic the fundamental elements that comprise existence and what they are made from, plus the interconnections or inter-relatedness of these elements. This make Affine Psychology very much a successor to the original formation of psychology: Structural Psychology, as developed by Wundt and Titchener over a century ago. We reject the notion of the Psyche as a separate entity from the body, and instead, we embrace a holistic perspective that acknowledges the intricate relationships between intelligence, feeling, physiology, and environment.

Affine Psychology offers a unified framework that integrates insights from various disciplines, including neuroscience, anthropology, sociology, linguistics, formal logic, and philosophy — namely phenomenology, American pragmatism, and Buddhism. By synthesising these diverse perspectives, we aim to provide a more comprehensive understanding of human behavior and mental processes. The end goal being to reduce people’s suffering through mental and behavioral training that leads to greater life satisfaction, fulfillment, and contentment.

But Affine Psychology is not merely a theoretical endeavor. We are committed to inspiring practical applications that can transform lives. Our research extends beyond the confines of the laboratory, seeking to address real-world issues and improve therapeutic interventions.

Through our blog, 5MP explores a wide range of topics, from the nature of consciousness and phenomenology, to the dynamics of inter-subjectivity. Each post hopes to offer thought-provoking insights and practical strategies informed by the principles of Affine Psychology.

Karl Popper:

“Whenever a theory appears to you as the only possible one, take this as a sign that you have neither understood the theory nor the problem which it was intended to solve.”

Join us on this journey of exploration and discovery as we challenge the status quo and forge new paths in the field of psychology. Together, we can unlock the mysteries of the Psyche and create a more harmonious relationship between individuals and their world. Welcome to Affine Psychology – where introspection and intuition combined with logic leads to insight.
